Decriminalization of Marijuana in Savannah

In March of 2018, Savannah’s City Council voted on a measure to decrease the penalties for possessing marijuana. Instead of being charged with a misdemeanor offense, a first offense for possessing the drug will now be punished by a ticket and a fine of $150.

Is Marijuana Legal in Savannah?

It is important to understand that although a first offense possession of marijuana is now decriminalized (meaning it will not result in a misdemeanor charge) it is still illegal to possess marijuana in Savannah.

It is also important to note that marijuana possession is still a misdemeanor offense throughout most of the state of Georgia, including areas of Chatham County that are outside of the Savannah city limits.
