The Most Common Orange Crush Arrests and How to Avoid Them

If it’s springtime at Tybee Island, it’s Orange Crush time! Many students flock to the beaches of Tybee every year to enjoy the weather and relax with friends. However, there are more police officers on Tybee Island during Orange Crush weekend than at any other time of the year, and this leads to hundreds of arrests.

If you are going to Orange Crush this year, know your legal rights. The following is a list of the most common Orange Crush arrests and how to avoid them:

Crime Suggestions
DUI Never tell a police officer that you have had anything to drink. Doing so will only subject you to further questioning, and you have the right to say no.
Possession of Marijuana Always refuse to let police officers search your car or purse. If you consent to a search, you cannot challenge its legality in the future. This could be key to your defense.
Assault/Battery Walk away from anyone who tries to pick a fight with you. There are too many police officers and surveillance cameras around during Orange Crush, and anything you do will be seen and likely caught on tape.
Unlawful Possession of a Firearm Be alert and know who someone is before sharing a ride. If you are in someone else’s car and they unlawfully possess a firearm (either because they are a felon or because the firearm is stolen), you could be charged with a weapons offense as well.
